What is Viagra?

Impotence: an estimated 10% of men are affected by it. Especially at an older age, erectile dysfunction occurs regularly. One of the solutions is Viagra. But what is a Viagra pill really? Below we will give you more information about this erection pill.

Erectile dysfunction

The penis contains several cavernous bodies. During an erection, these bodies are filled with blood. This makes the penis stiff, thicker and longer. When obtaining or maintaining a complete erection is impossible, this is called erectile dysfunction or impotence.

What is Viagra?

Viagra is an erection pill made by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. It contains the active substance sildenafil. Sildenafil was originally developed as a treatment for angina pectoris (chest pain). During scientific research, the positive effect on erectile function emerged. Since 1998, sildenafil has been used mainly as a drug to treat erectile dysfunction.

Viagra: how does it work?

Viagra provides a sustained erection in two ways. First of all, it dilates the blood vessels in the penis, which allows the cavernous bodies to be filled with blood and stiffens the penis. In addition, sildenafil inhibits the breakdown of substances that dilate the blood vessels, so the blood does not leave the cavernous bodies. As a result, the erection lasts longer. However, sexual excitement will always be required, for example through physical stimulation or sexually exciting thoughts. Without sexual excitement, you will not get an erection with Viagra. Sildenafil contains no hormones and is not a sexually stimulating drug.

Dosage and usage

Viagra is available in three dosages: 25, 50 and 100 milligram. The pills look like small, blue, diamond-shaped tablets and are sometimes called 'blue diamonds' or 'vitamin V'. Do not use Viagra more than once a day. Make sure to take the tablet on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour after a meal). The drug starts to work after about half an hour and its effect lasts about 4 to 5 hours. Sometimes you will have to try Viagra several times to notice the effect.

Side effects

Erection pills such as sildenafil can hace side effect, such as headaches, hearing problems and cardiovascular disease. Always discuss with your doctor or general practitioner whether you can use Viagra safely, especially if you are taking other medication. Viagra should not be combined with all types of medication, because there may be life-threatening complications. If you have a heart condition, you should never use Viagra without prescription.

Using Viagra

Do you plan to use Viagra? Then please discuss this with your (online) doctor or general practitioner. Although many men find it embarrassing to talk about impotence, it's the most normal thing in the world for your doctor/general practitioner. You can find out together whether sildenafil is the best option for you and what dosage works best for you to enjoy sex again.
